At least insofar as truth. For years the Preacher - and most of his butt buddies - simply seemed to deny the common practice of additives, the most visible being sugar. And don't you think they knew? More than a few good, intelligent and experienced lovers of spirits were both publicly and privately ridiculed for even asking the question.
In my last post on this subject, I speculated on just how these shillmeisters would react. Admitting they knew? No way, I said. The webmaster of the Floating Rum Turd took the position that it was always common knowledge, and so what? But the Preacher was a different matter - he'd been extremely vocal in clearly denying the practice.
Now's he's been confronted by an obvious reader of The Project:
The Preacher could only recommend his own "Special Selection" rums, and one of the cane juice rums he's long repped. As far as addressing the question, he continued..."There has been a lot of information lately about how many famous "premium" rums (Zacapa, Zaya, Diplomatico, Angostura) are artificially sweetened or altered with sugar, etc. I am interested in finding some un-adulterated rums and was wondering if anyone knows of some good, unaltered rums ("true" or "natural" rum, as I've seen it referred to)."
Out of the bag? No one seemed to care? Are you kidding? Surely that is an admission he knew, however oblique. He speaks as though only some of what's available were "obviously" sweetened, but that "no one seemed to care". How could they, as many who did care and even raised the question were summarily kicked off his commercial site. As far as being "obvious", no so. Even the Frozen Furball vigorously defended his #1 rum Diplomatico, a sugar bomb if there ever was one. It also fails the smell test when it's now clear that MOST (not "some") rums are sweetened, not to mention the many other additives."When the fact that many rums were sweetened became public I wondered what the consumer reaction would be. Some of these rums were obviously sweetened but until recently no one seemed to care. It's an interesting question and now that the sweet question is out of the bag, what about other additives? "
The use of additives and phonying up of rum have been well known to many of us, not least Richard Seale who recently went VERY public on these practices, but has been addressing these practices for many years. I'm confident the Preacher is quite aware that sugar is merely the tip of the penis of an industry that is jamming all manner of adulterated crappola down our throats (word picture, patent pending).
Such a dicking it is. And now it's out. Will the gang rape of the rum drinking public continue now that their world has been rocked? Stay tuned...
