I've had Copper Fox Rye (without any Founders participation... review is linked) and it's pretty good. Perhaps you should get a bottle to compare if you can find it.

I like New Amsterdam Gin and consider it the best cheap gin I've had (about $17 for a handle here). I really enjoy Hendricks (modern style gin), but this is a much more economical alternative. My favorite yet is Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin.

My first drink was a White Russian (2 parts vodka, 1 part Kahlua and splash of cream) and I've been a fan ever since, although I'm more inclined to have a Black Russian ( sans cream) these days. Kahlua has an artificial and overly sweet flavor to me, so I've explored different coffee flavored rums a...

I don't know how long he plans to age the brandy, but 1-2 years sounds likely and the maturity date must be quickly approaching if he was able to put back product from the new still back when he completed it. Details have been hard to come by, but I'll let you know when I hear of any release.

Sorry to disappoint you, but his Facebook posts suggest that a brandy release is coming soon and a single malt whisky is rumored. From what I understand, he's been building custom stills in the meantime. Aside from a couple of interviews and an article that he wrote, he's been fairly quiet for the p...

Start with Barbancourt 5 Star (8 Year). It's a great introductory cane juice rum at a great price.

Redbreast Lustau

The most interesting new Irish Whiskey I've heard about lately is the new Redbreast expression, Lustau. Like all Redbreast whiskies, it's single pot stilled. The new twist is that this is sherry finished for a full year (first-fill Oloroso sherry butts). I've heard great things about this whiskey, b...

I just had this one for the first time this week and highly enjoyed it. It's sweet for sure, but like El Dorado 15, full of flavors and fun to explore. It's only $38 in Texas and I plan on getting a bottle to explore it further. I just really wish I could taste it without the extra sugar!

Water is a big contributor to the taste of vodka. I conducted a blind test of vodkas made from Everclear with the only difference being the type of water used to dilute them to 40% ABV. The difference was amazing, especially for the one using distilled water... it was bitter and "rough." T...

For me, this was the biggest indictment, "[Mr. Seale's] remark to me that I just did not appreciate pure, unadulterated rum (in other words, the added sugar of other, higher-scoring rums had skewed my perspective)." I can't believe he so casually dismissed a comment like this from an indus...

Balcones Texas Rum Review

I finally got around to reviewing Balcones Texas Rum, part of their Special Release series. You can read the details here, but I'll issue a spoiler here... I was pleasantly surprised at how much it had improved. My opinion completely changed after some (extended) oxidation.

I've long enjoyed MGXO in the packaging that ended last year, but I haven't had any from the new packaging. A friend shared some 2006 vintage with me last week and I have to say that this was much improved over what I've had in the past few years (as the Cap'n has been telling me)... richer, while m...
