Wrote a short article about how Portuguese immigrants (mostly from Madeira) had a huge impact on the rum styles of Trinidad, Guyana, and Antigua.

The Mount Gay Distilleries Tour

I recently visited the Mount Gay Visitor's Center when I was in Barbados a few weeks ago. It's a fun tour that begins with free Black Barrel Rum Punch and continues with some lessons about Mount Gay's history and heritage followed by a tasting of some of their products. Read more about it here or fe...

Anax, I once visited the area, and we got a free T-shirt for visiting the distillery. I met a lovely local woman, and we spent quite some days laying on the beach and drinking "Old Oak Rum", with a liter of Coke. Same company? As Rum Warrior said, Oak Oak was indeed an Angostura brand tha...

I remember the first time I tasted the Mount Gay Extra Old. It was a bottle from 2002 and it was flawless to the point of being boring. Smooth caramel with hints of tobacco, leather and ripe bananas and no alcohol burn. I don't really mind the Mount Gay XO being a bit younger because I like the cara...

I'm surprised that you didn't drink White Oak, since it's the most popular rum on the island. VAT 19 is a great choice, I always drink either that or Royal Oak. I'll drink 1919 or 1824 if it's available but I rarely ever buy a bottle. I remember when Angostura 1787 was about to be launched I wasn't ...

Thanks for the links anax... Of special interest is your link to the "Wonk" for his list of new TTB approved labels. VERY interesting. The sad news is that Angustura has a long history of serious alteration (1919), of which sugar is just the beginning. These are really flavored rum liqueu...

Nice to hear man! It's a pretty decent rum for cocktails in my opinion, although locally almost everyone considers it as plonk!

Hey there!

Hey everyone! I'm Anax, hailing from the island of Trinidad. I've been a rum drinker for a few years and I've found myself on this forum once or twice in last year. I was never particularly fond of rum in the past; I found whisky and brandy to be equally appealing. My preference for rum came after I...
