Trader Vic recommends substituting spiced rum for demerara rum when you don't have the later. I know this hearsay for this board but there it is.

I use both Barboncourt and Appleton Estate in my Mai Tais. I do find the 8 star much smoother than the younger Barboncourt.

Don Beach used a couple of drops of Absinthe in many of his classic rum drinks. I made mine with over proof vodka and Absinthe essence ordered from ebay.
