I picked up some mellow corn yesterday ($13 here in Ohio). To us it was a little harsh straight. When we added some water, it took away some of the alcohol burn and made it much more pleasant. Not very complex, but not bad (especially for the price). The interesting part was adding the mgp rye to it...

Interesting. I'll try to find some mellow corn when I go to Tennessee this September.

The Beverage Alcohol Manual

Great information on definitions, additives, labeling etc. in the US. I think it was posted before but I was just reintroduced to it.

I can't find it right now, but Diageo has signed a contract to receive most of the production from MGP. I found the article, but it was referring to rye: Since then, many straight ryes have been introduced using whiskey made by the distillery best known as Lawrenceburg Distillers Indiana (LDI), whi...

Your ‘Craft’ Rye Whiskey Is Probably From a Factory

Your ‘Craft’ Rye Whiskey Is Probably From a Factory Distillery in Indiana ******* Capn's Log : Great post, and a must read article. Apparently the "fast aging" scam has failed, so what's next? Make it all up - brand, story and product. Linked in the above article is this HUGE list of &quo...

I can't find it right now, but Diageo has signed a contract to receive most of the production from MGP. A lot of MGP/LDI stock has come into the marketplace recently under the name of many smaller "craft" distillers. They are trying to sell stuff until their own stocks start to mature. MGP...

A good question... I'm sure you'll get some more responses than mine on what "under 5" rums do well. I'd have to add Prichard's Fine Rum, Doorly's 5, Barbancourt Three Star (4 years), Special Barbados (Seales), Ron Viejo de Caldas (3 years), Santa Teresa Anejo - there are others. Close at...

I'm not an expert taster, but it did have some vanilla and oak. I was just struck at how sweet it was. It was so dissimilar to the rye and bourbon I've been having recently and so similar to the sweeter smoother rums that I was immediately suspect. In this review, they state that there is "dist...

TX Blended Whiskey: Sweetly suspect

My cousin just brought in a blended whiskey from Texas. I tried it and it reminded me more of a demeraran rum (smooth and sweet) than a whiskey, and I'm convinced that there is sugar in it. At $34-40 a bottle, my recommendation is to pass.

How to Make Mass-Produced Wine Taste Great

I saw this a while ago and with all the talk about sugar and other additives in rum, I thought that others would find this interesting: Oak adjuncts: Oak barrels can make wine taste drier and lend it notes of vanilla, but they’re expensive. A cheaper alternative? Oak chips, sawdust, or “essence”—a l...

Eye opening

This has been a great thread. I became disillusioned with rum after finding out that one of my favorite rums was doctored ( Ron Matusalem ). Soon after I realized that another of my top favorites was probably doctored ( Westerhall Plantation Rum ). It got me thinking that the El Dorado's were also d...
