Of course Jimbo, a flavour wheel and some effort would more than likely broaden my horizon but how many out there are really willing to educate themselves thus? Keep in mind my issue is not with the merit of a well written review but rather with the universal practicality of it. That, and pompous wa...

Please don't misunderstand me Cyril, I really am not against all reviewers in fact I only really have a problem with a few. My main point was that for the ignorant and unwashed, like myself, flavour descriptors are pointless. We can't identify the flavour notes and even if a beautifully worded profe...

17 year Benriach Solstice

Non chill filtered, no colouring. Heavily peated. I saw a Ralfy video once where he talked about the mellowing of peat over time. He said a 10 or 12 year peated whisky would have a stronger peated taste than it's older siblings. He also stated that the older bottlings were often finished in smaller ...

Yeah he does but it's an exercise is economic sabotage to order from Glynn. Only something I would do when I was overflowing with riches.

Blanton's Straight From The Barrel

A little bit wary when it arrived in a dodgy wooden display box, was even more wary when I read 'chill filtered' written on the side. The initial smell was very promising. Dram poured and the aroma straight was enticing. I added 3 teaspoons water, let sit and stuck my nose in it again. Now more comp...

Saw that Pussers linked your review on their Facebook promotion page. They must have been impressed. I only buy the 75% and wouldn't buy any other.

Ha! Mr Spragoo.

And yep Arctic Wolf = the perfect example of what not to aspire to if one wishes to be a booze reviewer.

My point. I fail to see any useful reason for a layman and casual enjoyer to embark on complex tasting notes or descriptions. In my opinion it detracts from the enjoyment of the moment. I have tried but I have am resolved to only loosely describe any profiles or taste descriptions and to not think t...

A Tasting Comparison

The scene; A nice evening sitting in front of a fire with a newly bought quality bottle of spirits. A dram is poured and the aroma noted, add a little water perhaps? A polite and reverent rest period is given to the dram and after a suitable time the first sip is taken. ... an experienced and some w...

Mac Baren Dark Twist

Awhile ago I bought some Mac B Dark Twist and I found it not only difficult to keep alight but also not overly impressive. I jarred it and left it. Yesterday I wanted a nice smoke but a simple one without too much complexity or spice, so I looked at the Dark twist again. But this time to add an extr...

Anything from Samuel Gawith or Gawith and Hoggarth (available from GQ Tobacco) is about as classic as it gets. Some old aromatics and some very very strong ropes and plugs. I would buy more from GQ if it wasn't for the cost of shipping.

I like the NF but also have wandering tastes and have by and large moved on from this blend. I would still recommend it to someone who has just started pipe smoking.
