An interesting experiment (although slighty blasphemical) would be to take a proven sugar-free rum and add gradually sugar, tasting after each addition. This way the tasted difference sugar makes could perhaps be identified and evaluated. Of course the rum would be become "sweeter" but the...

At least in Germany the price of the 15-Year-Old begins to border on "too high"... here we pay 39,99€, which amounts to even more (around 55) dollars. That does not seem to be fair - then again which other Demeraran Rums aside from El Dorado would be alternatives? I don't know whether the ...

I agree. It is not an easy "first-taste-ahhhhh"-rum but you have to invest some time to really get the best of this jewel. I'd rate it even higher than 7, but 8 sounds very much... :)

Do all FdC-Rums have the barkeeper-thing instead of a cork in their bottles?

Pure awesomeness radiates from the post preceding this. I am enlightened :) ******* Capn's Log : Che thanks, but believe me, you are among a group of very competent and knowledgable posters - any of whom could have easily written this. Sue Sea and I are extremely proud to be associated with them.

Infact Dave's and your proposition of category-standards is the first and best step to mor objective or at least intersubjective reviews. That is vital. I think complete information on the bottle would suffice - then no minimum standards would be necessary. As long as the declaration remains unclear...

That is exactly my point of view :) In my humble opinion currently an informed choice about rum can only be made by consulting people who do have experience and a certain amount of knowledge about different producers. As Jimbo pointed out in several other topics even many of the "experts" ...

Sure. Honesty on the bottle goes first. That would be a very important step.

Scientific Schools of Rum

Because of the "Added sugar"-thread I have the impression that the most common "school" of scientific thinking might be applied to the evaluation and classification of Rum as well. A first impression (and only a small sample for the beginning): Anarchism Anything goes - fits the ...

Nah. While I think sugar should be declarated on the bottle I see no need to damn rum just because of it. Rum always was and is more rogueish and unregulated than Whisky or Cognac - so I would not judge a very tasty and good bottle of ED12 solely because of the sugar. :) ******* Capn's Log : no one ...

Here in Germany the prices of MGXO and Seales 10y are actually similar, we pay around 38-40€ (50$) for 1l MGXO and 30-32€ (38$) for 0,7l Seales. After trying both I'd say they are worth the money although some other brands like Doorlys, Appleton and Diplomatico give them quite a run for their money....

Very interesting link. The list is quite disturbing... but at least I got the confirmation for my yesterday-evening-impression: I tried my El Dorado 15 Years for the first time and thought that it is sweetened - now that is confirmed. A complete list of these sugar amounts would be valuable since we...

Your Review nails it. A very strong 8 for the price. I liked the mix of "dryer" leathery and oaky moments and fruity apricot ones. It was a blind acquistion (I read the review after I bought the bottle since it was cheap (for German standards)). Truly a well balanced rum with versatile fla...

Am I the only one who had problems with Angostura 1919's finish? After an intense albeit sweet experience in nose and on tongue the finish baffled me a little bit. I suddenly tasted salty peanuts, perhaps walnut. After the fruity banana beginning this seemed out of place and ruined the balance for m...

Aye! My name is Leon, I am 25 years old, just finished my college education and I entered the world of Rum approx. 1-2 years ago. The question is: If you liked rum from the beginning which is the point marking you "getting serious" about it. I'd say it happened on the night between 2012 an...
