New rums coming from Luca Gargano/Velier

Seems like Velier has a new selection by signore Gargano - and my word, these rums look like a lovely bunch of goodies!! - Forsyths pot still 2005 - Foursquare Pot Still - Forsyths 151 proof - Port Mourant Still - Monymusk EMB 248 - Muller LL IV/30177 http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/889012Habitati...

These Portugese stills are becoming very popular - Strathearn has the same kind, and if memory serves me right, so did Eden.

Another Hispanic rum where age statements have been nonsense most likely. Well, hard to prove but the taste has never matched the age I felt...Of course, just a personal observation.

Putting whisky to one side and concentrating on rum. The original discussion I remember centered around whether rum could be sweet or not. As usual you went off on another tangent and basically said that no rum can have anything approaching a sweet profile without having added sugar. Dear Pirate, I...

The shop in Campbeltown is a great place to visit - so many goodies! :-) Cadenhead's has magnificent Whiskies and Rums. The people behind the selections, and in sales, are really nice folks too, much like the good people of Springbank. Last time I popped in the shop at Campbeltown I got 28yo Demerar...

The true face of Demerara Rum? Need not look any further...Italian company Velier, with their "Selezione Gargano" has released previously undiscovered beauties by selecting casks from the vast aging Rum stocks DDL has. These magnificent Rums have amazed all who have tasted them - and left ...

El Dorado wine casks

It seems that El Dorado has then broken the link between themselves and the wonderful Italian independent bottler, Velier. This is really sad news to any and all friends of real rums, since through Velier we got to see what Demerara is really capable of being - instead of the overly sweetened, filte...

Barrel-aging in sweet wine as a source of sugar in a rum?

It was suggested elsewhere (not this forum) that aging rum in sweet wine casks for any number of months/years would cause the rum to become slightly sweet in taste - and of course contain sugar thus obtained. Another excuse for some rums to test out as "sweetened" ones, it seemed to me. We...

I added a comment: How the "smooth, sweet taste" is created in rum? Rum, like all other distilled spirits, is totally dry containing zero sugar. Even barrel-aging in oloroso other sweet wine casks does not bring in sugar. Sugar is ADDED before bottling into the rum, as is often a number of...

Questions that remain foggy to me: 1. As the distillation process goes on, the leftovers in each of the pot, low wine and high wine tanks must increasingly be made of water/larger molecules. When we say that alcohol "comes off the still" at a particular proof, doesn't that proof gradually...

I contacted Appleton about this question. I have in my collection a newer most updated release Appleton bottle of the 21 year I bought from a retailer in California. It was the 2011 AA release bottle number 1832. Added sugar I'm not so sure about. I have reached out to Appleton with the question. I...

If you could present the facts which show Appelton Estate add sugar to their rums I'd be very keen to see the evidence. I seem to remember a while ago that any such claims on the Rum Project should be at least backed up with some factual evidence. So far all Appleton's up to the 21 Year Old have be...

I have some older bottlings of Z available for a sample, if needed. A 2007 summer Alko listing says that Zacapa 23 anos (then they still used that age statement) has been measured to contain 45G/litre of sugar. By the way, since the manufacturers have a history of changing the amounts of sugar in th...
