Banks Five Island is an outstanding blended white rum, with rums from - you guessed it, five different islands - as well as a Batavia arrak component. I've never had the Seven Island, their gold rum.

One question I have for JaRiMi - when he says ED products have declined "in recent years" - when did this start? I got my first bottles back in 2010, when I first got into rum.

The sad thing is, DDL could take the sugar out, keep the price the same, and it would be the best value for money out there (15 sells for about $32-35 at my favorite shops). I believe them about the stills, and I believe they are honest about the aging. If Seale is selling his 10 year at $21 and st...

The idea must be to counteract the Coriolis effect, so it would be clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere. :P
That's exactly what I was thinking

For the moment... I think that sometimes we are misled simply by the numbers themselves: 0.000001 kg seems smaller than 1g, seems smaller than 1000mg. Deception by presentation is Marketing 101. Actually, .000001 kg is smaller than 1 g - 1/1000th the size to be precise :P ******* Capn's Log: Excell...

Maybe it's just my synapses, but after multiple re-reads I can't seem to come to any interpretation other than Maria is recommending weighing the coffee and water separately before brewing - particularly noting both their video and written instructions. In any case there is negligible difference be...

How about boiling off a sample, or allowing it to dry - and weighing the residue? Also you'd need a very sensitive scale to weigh the sugar left over. Not all that sensitive - at least in the context of the lab scale in the taste test someone undertook earlier, where he was supposedly able to accur...

I think when talking about weighing the water, they are referring to after brewing - to allow for the amount of water absorbed by the grounds, and stop extraction before hitting the "tails" (to borrow a distilling term). I watched a pourover video one time and the guy had his carafe on a p...

I tasted the ED 12 and 15 side by side today, and I have to say although I found the 12 yr sweeter, I would hardly call it "much much sweeter" as someone stated earlier. At most "noticeably" if not "somewhat". If I tasted the Diplomatico Reserva and the ED 12 side by si...

Re: Still a Great Rum

I revisited this rum last night and, despite all of the recent discussion about the addition of sugar by El Dorado, I still consider this a great rum. It isn't as sweet as I remember (probably all of the recent discussion playing games with my mind), but it's still every bit as complex and enjoyabl...

So I noticed some roasts I hadn't heard of when i was browsing coffee at Whole Foods - Cinnamon and New England. I found them on the list here http://www.ncausa.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageID=74 I was wondering - since City roast occurs after first crack, does that mean that the lighter roasts on th...

<start rant> Holey crap Batman! This is getting out of hand! Hear hear Sleepy, I was going to post something along these lines when I got home from work. Just a little while ago we weren't sure ED 12 had any added sugar, when in fact it has 45 g/l - and now we are saying even 1 g/l is unacceptable?...

Most people prefer the Green or Gold labels to the Blue. Blue's high price is due to the rarity of some of the components moreso than the quality. I have never heard of Ardbeg 12 yr, it was probably the 10 you had. If you get the chance try the Uigeadail, it is my favorite Scotch so far. I just got ...

I would like to see figures for the El Dorado 5 and 8 year because they taste less sweet to me than the 12 and 15 yr.
