https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... C3VTgIPoGU"This glacier appears to have come ungrounded, flowing out to sea at a rapid pace and draining ice from the ice cap in the process. The ice cap is now thinning by an average of 25 meters per year.
The waters of the Arctic Ocean have warmed at a rapid pace relative to the rest of the world over recent years, and 2012 in particular was a year of exceptional melting and warmth in the arctic due to some extreme storms. The sudden movement in this glacier suggests that this pulse of heat has helped destabilize glaciers in the surrounding territory and it is happening at an exceptionally rapid pace."
Whatever you do watch this WHOLE video of the largest calving of the ice cap ever witnessed and filmed. What seems to be happening is the dreaded hockey stick effect, wherein the effects of global change reach critical levels, and the change begins to accelerate exponentially.
This as many know portends a critical time. We are now well past the point where we can reverse the effects of carbon induced change, but at the least will have to live with a very changed and much less liveable planet. For example the food bowl of America - California - is now experiencing sustained drought and the fighting has begun over the diminishing water table.
It may well be we are very close to the point where the acceleration will be completely unamanageable and another major extinction becomes possible.
The majesty.. the horror...
