Welcome: Pirate Don of Pirate's Choice

Post by Capn Jimbo »

Welcome to Don Pirate, er, Pirate Don...

It was a glorious warm evening with the waves lapping at our oceanfront campsite in the Paradise called the Keys. Sue Sea and I were ensconced at perhaps one of the greatest campgrounds in the world - Long Key State Park at mile market 67 (that's just, uh, 67 miles from mile zero in Key West). Each campsite is within about 5 steps from the Atlantic Ocean, and separated by natural barriers and short, split rail fences.

The park sells split wood on the honor system, and we had a nicely burning fire, sputtering and gaily burning and carrying sparks heavenward into the tropical night.

Earlier we'd stopped by our favorite deli and liquor store and found a rum called "Pirate's Choice", born in the Keys, our favorite place on earth. Of course we had to buy - to us - this unknown rum. We didn't expect much, but hey, it's the Keys, who cares.

Long Key is in the Middle Keys (our favorite section), we were in the Middle Keys, and the bottle claimed that Pirate's Choice Molasses Reef Rum was "... developed in the Florida Middle Keys by local fishing captains and dive shop owners seeking rum that represented the free spirit and independent approach to life in the Keys and the Caribbean."

Folks, the purchase was a no brainer. And to our pleasant surprise this rum turned out to be a real rum in every sense of the word - perfectly balanced and growing from start to finish. And warranted a well deserved "8" from us.

Accordingly, we are both pleased and honored to welcome Pirate Don, the President of Pirate's Choice. He joins such luminaries as the Bilgemunkey, Dori Bryant and Ian Williams - not to mention a small, but notably intelligent group of posters.
