The Italian rum scene is very active indeed, and they have some absolutely fantastic small-batch rums which are bottled under the Samaroli, Velier, Gargano labels.
I have had the chance of tasting some of these while visiting Rome and checking out some of the better shops in town and must say that the Italian independent bottlers deserve a medal of honour for what they have done in bottling rum as it comes out from the casks.
The Rum Club pages are both interesting and informative, I enjoy reading them and translating them with babelfish (since I know very, very little Italian).
