Hidden Jewels Dept: RnD's Spicing Page

RnD's Spicing Page - miss it and you're nuts, Meg...

Any idiot knows, or should, that today's spiced rums are distinguished not by their quality, but by the use of artificial spices and additives and by faux "premiumisation".

And what is that?

In the old days, it was the basic product that offered 80% of the value. The marketing trick then was to add chrome, whistles, fins and other such bullshit to "premiumize" the product for much greater profit (with little additional cost). FWIW this is the current trend in rum, much discussed on spirits marketing websites.

RnD does it right...

RnD (reviewed at the top of Scuttlebutt) offers the first of what I call "hidden jewels" - a valuable and rewarding tidbit of good information or alternative viewpoint, in this case...

How to really spice a rum (link)!

This well hidden article is terrific. In it RnD share their experiences with spicing rums to taste using completely authentic, real spices. It is obvious that they know their their stuff, and share their methods with the world. Covered: vanilla, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and mace, star anise and allspice. These are indeed the authentic spices of the island.

Nicely done! Click on the link or be forever banned to your Captain Morgan...
