It's all over...
The corporatization of almost everything: consumer goods (Walmart), donuts (Dunkin Donuts), gasoline (BP) et all, are coming to a rum bottle near you.
Don't look now but genetically modified plants and animals (GMO) have already taken over. Currently, sugar cane has been modified in such a way as to benefit huge industrial agribusiness and giant pesticide producers such that:
1. small farmers and food production are rapidly being smothered or eliminated by huge corporate industrialized production
2. communities are literally being exposed to unregulated amounts of both local cane product and very dangerous pesticides
3. modified cane is taking over at a rapid pace, spreads and modifies nearby fields, and is designed solely for the purposes of inexpensive, large scale production for the highest possible sugar content.
The GMO cane is NOT designed for rum.
Goodbye terroir (if it ever really existed). And hello to the Universe of Bacardi, produced from one or few species of cane, containing dangerous levels of super-pesticides and from molasses.
This takeover has proceeded regardless damage to both local communities and farmers and to the rest of us - consumers of sugar and the related product of rum. Read all about it (here). Believe me, I will have much more to say about this...
Prediction: Bacardiazation of Rum
