Hidden Jewels Dept: Under the counter, a shotgun?

Post by Capn Jimbo »

Under the counter: Shotgun, or?

In the Reviewer's Review of RnD, my findings were "So although their reviews are absolutely worth a read, I'd ignore their ratings". And that is still true. I love reading their reviews, but you can take at least a full point off most of their ratings, and they'll still be tippling toward the high end.

But I do love reading them. Their descriptors are good, and their approach is both honest and well intended. So it is with yet another terrific article by the good time boyz. Their last jewel was their competent article on just how to spice rums at home.

They've done it, and it was good.

Their article covers yet another feature of traveling in the Carib - "Under the Counter" rums. These refer to homebrew creations sold "under the counter" by local people who blend strong rums with all manner of spices, barks, insects, turtle penis and the like.

This really happens. No viagra needed, either for the turtle or the drinker.

Most seem to fall into the medicinal/spiritual aspect of all spirits, as done throughout history by all manner of monks, wizards and soothsayers using secret recipes and serving the Emperor. On the other hand, under the counter rums are made by the people, and for the people.

And for Roger and Dave.

In this article RnD describe their travels in St. Martin, St. Lucia and Granada. It is a hidden jewel of an article, not to be missed (link).
