Rum: Color Variations

Post by Capn Jimbo »

Now we all know that more than a few distillers add a bit of caramel - not for taste - but to maintain or produce the desired color of their products. Now over the past few weeks I've run into more than one glaring variation at more than one liquor store. Two brands and these were surprising:

Tommy Bahama and Vizcaya VXOP.

Why surprising? TB is by the meticulous Richard Seales, and Vizcaya is promoted as a rather expensive super premium. Now although I'm sure the flavor is little affected, it is more than a little disconcerting to see a dark and medium amber side by side.

As Sue Sea says: "Presentation is not everything, but it is important". It should show care and attention to detail and consistent appearance. Ouch...

Though, I must admit that I'm intrigued by the varience in color, especially when it comes to my blendings. For my SeaKings rhum, I can tell that I'm spot-on when it has that golden red color...like a sunset viewed from Key West... :D

Did someone say Key West?

Ah yes, Key West and sunset from Mallory's Pier! With a good brew, some fresh popped corn and maybe one of Henrietta's coconut treats...
