Regulars here are aware of The Great Rye Controversy, namely that of the many, many "Potemkin Distillers" (in name only) of ryes actually made by MGP. The Poster Rye for what many consider lying, facked-up, bullshit is Templeton Rye.
These promoters did an especially bang-up job of telling a grand story about their Prohibition era rye, made to that old and "revered" recipe, just as it once was in good old Iowa. They made every effort to imply it was distilled there. Just one small problem:
None of that is true.
MGP in Indiana makes it to a standard recipe. Thanks to Cowdery the word was out, and Templeton became outed for their slick and deceptive marketing. This became such common knowledge that the Des Moines (Iowa) Register, a major Iowan newspaper confronted the president - oddly named Bush - of Templeton...
...While Templeton Rye notes the use of an Indiana distillery in certain pages of its website, industry and legal experts raised concerns about the lack of information on bottles and marketing materials heavily focused on the town of Templeton's whiskey distilling past.
"We have never tried to hide that fact," Bush said of its Indiana distilling. "And, in fact, we're going to take an additional step and amend the label and include 'Distilled In Indiana' just because we want to be transparent and we don't want any confusion in the marketplace."
Per Cowdery...
But here's the stunner! Quoting Prez Bush..."Templeton's many lies and obfuscations have been widely reported within the whiskey community,.. In the article, Underwood says that Templeton will bring its labels into compliance within 60 days. He also admitted that the Prohibition-era recipe claims are false and promised to build a distillery in Templeton to make the product."
"The whiskey is not the most important thing," Underwood said. "The town of Templeton is the most important thing, and the state of Iowa. The whiskey almost is the afterthought. It helps. It brings this to life."
Flat Ass Bottom Line
The president - in desperation - revealed the real truth about spirits today, and is actually proud of it. And what's that truth? Simply, that the spirit itself is actually "the afterthought". Apparently the label, presentation, hype and marketing is what counts. An amazing quote and admission, don't you agree? It expresses the height of disrepect and condescension, as much as to say "We can sell you dummies any shit we want, as long as you keep buying the bullshit outside of the bottle...".
