An intermediate report...
First - and again - my thanks to Sleepy for his contributions and for helping turn us on to the joys of brewing our own coffee. After having done this for quite some months now, here's our take:
1. It's easy: Sue Sea loves garage sales and thrift shops and we found an El Cheepo hot air popcorn popper for $3.99. These not only work, they work very well and produce a nice even roast.
2. It's LESS expensive than store bought: we get all our coffee from Sweet Maria's, whose principal travels the world and imports green beans from all manner of small and family producers from all over the world. Even including shipping our cost comes to about $7 a pound or even a bit less.
3, It's delicious. Trust me, there is nothing - nothing! - like fresh roasted, fresh brewed coffee. There is no comparison, period.
4. You can experiment and create your own blends. A light roasted coffee tends to deliver more floral and fruity elements, while dark roasts move more into the roasted, chocolate and deep tones (much like younger vs aged rums). We do three roasts - light, medium and dark and blend them for a coffee that's complex and interesting. We sometimes even add some very dark roast for a taste kick (think French or Italian roast).
Friends, we can't recommend enough that you try this. Find a used popper, and buy an 8 pound sampler from Maria's (with eight different coffees from around the world) and enjoy!
