I watched this guy give advice on how he smokes his pipe. The tamping technique he uses in which he makes the baccy into a mound works great. It has helped me to get an even burn in the bowl and keep the bowl lit as well. check out the video and try it out for yourselfs. It might help, it helped me I know that.

And the first time or two it worked, but other times it hasn't. It seems there are many variables at work - the tobacco, whether its cut fine, coarse, roped or pressed, moisture, original pack, pipe...
Yet I rather like the technique based on the notion of a centered coal and source of heat, so I continue to use this in part. It may not help, but I'm trying, lol...
