Links of Interest Dept: Sausage and Pipes

Pipes on the ships of old were nothing new. Tobacco and rum made their appearance in short order with tobacco inherited from American Indians and rum from the Caribbean. Smoking aboard ship was allowed by limited to a safe area and at safe times, ergo the "smoking lamp". Where? Usually near the Galley, as it is here. A huge thanks to the amazing da'rum - a man of high ideals and many talents. This is just one of them.

Links of Interest Dept: Sausage and Pipes

Post by Capn Jimbo »

Nope, no sausage links here...

But I thought it might be nice to have a thread to share links we posters thought of interest, plus a few words why...

The Professor's Pipe Tobacco Reviews:

It's amazing how many tobaccos this old timer has tried and reports on. This was a very early website and appears to be quite some years old (a good thing).
http://pipes.priss.org/

OoOPS (Organization of Online Pipe Smokers):
Non-commercial, newletter, online gatherings, funky and fun, lots of good non-commercial links. Another early website.

And a couple more...

Pipes.org:

An old blog with what seems a huge, well-organized list of links. Here's the links' page:
http://www.pipes.org/links/

Pipedia:

A HUGE website covering all things pipe in great, great detail. Here's their links page:
http://pipedia.org/wiki/Pipedia_Links

BTW, the more I visit Pipedia, the more I am impressed with both its depth and breadth. From newbies to collectors, to reviews and deep, deep coverage of the manafacturers, designs, even amateur pipe making with hand tools. Do NOT miss this link...

Couple more:

1. Pipes.org

Has been called the "grandfather" of pipe sites. Who really knows, but has multiple interesting sections for pipe and cigar smokers. Just a couple examples...

In praise of clenching for beginners, great...

You're really getting into the spirit of it Jimbo :) . I like that clenching article written by Eric. Although I must admit that even though I'm a clencher I still tend to smoke too fast and puff too heavily, resulting in a few relights and often also a small amount of wet unsmokable tobacco that I tip out at the end. I enjoy filling my senses with smoke though and the exhale through the nose of two plumes of smoke that bring a tear to the eye. :) :)

1. How to review pipe tobacco:
http://pipesandtobaccosmagazine.com/201 ... e-tobacco/

A truly fascinating article about how to evaluate them, quite in depth, even discusses pipes to use and/or dedicate for doing so. On Pipes and Tobacco Magazine's site. This long and very informative article is really a tease to subscribe, so I'm now sure how long it will be up. Don't miss this one...

2. Talking Tobacco:
http://www.talkingtobacco.com/category/ ... cription-2

Is the personal blog of "Russ" who apparently is quite well known for his work and blends at Pipes & Cigars. For example the link to the first page of the blog, which includes some subjects as:

Pipe Preferences; Of Corncobs, Knight and Time; A Grain of Truth (discusses grains); The Disresected Tobacco Chamber (often overlooked in choosing a piipe); Tools of the Trade; Stem Comparisons, and on and on. Very educational.

Carry on...

1. How to get a cool, dry smoke.
http://www.outwesttobacco.com/Cool_Smoke.htm

A GREAT article, covers the issue in great depth, discussing the makeup and role of the blending components, the form, the pipe and stem, and more. Good read, very educational.
