Size Counts: Pipe Capacity

Pipes on the ships of old were nothing new. Tobacco and rum made their appearance in short order with tobacco inherited from American Indians and rum from the Caribbean. Smoking aboard ship was allowed by limited to a safe area and at safe times, ergo the "smoking lamp". Where? Usually near the Galley, as it is here. A huge thanks to the amazing da'rum - a man of high ideals and many talents. This is just one of them.

Like many others the "grading" of pipe, eg by Dunhill, is hard to understand, because the grade does not truly correlate with the volume of the chamber. Seems most pipe's bowl chambers are typically between 0.6 and 1 inch in diameter (with 0.75 common), but to various depths. Ergo, they are hard to compare.

Found this chart somewhere. Whether it helps or not...

I've noticed that myself not many sites tell you the depth of the chamber.

I wouldn't buy a pipe without knowing it's dimensions. Most sites I go to do but on the odd occasion that I find one that doesn't an ebay check or google normally works.
