An absolutely fabulous e-based book by a guy who seems to know. Very complete in every way that I can see. Surprise: he addresses health and pipe smoking - his finding will amaze you...

Another (long) page you should download is by Milton Sherman "All About Tobacco". This has pics of the actual book, with the copy reproduced between each page. Sherman spent his lifetime working for American Tobacco, and speaks with great authority particulary about tobacco, the producers, the methods and the quality.

I ran across a simply stupendous piece of work by a researcher who really seems to know his stuff. He finds Sherman's book (above) to be filled with many errors and misleading. I'm on a hunt for a naturally aromatic and sweet tobacco that might have been smoked (alone) by the old Greeks. I note the Samsun-Maden and Samsun-Canik in this post.

An exerpt from this site:

"Izmir tobaccos are adapted to Aegean regions climate. This region has rainy winters, medium rainy springs and hot and dry summers.
Samsun tobaccos are adapted to coastal climate of Black Sea and also transition climate with mediterranean and inland climate with low temperature and dry climate.

The best aromatic flavored tobaccos are grown in Aegean region with shallow, rocky, non-productive, slant, reddish and grey coloured mountain slope soils. Very sunny and hot weather helps plant to produce small-sized leaves with resins which create aromatic flavor."

The poster "Istanbulin" also said this:

"Aroma can be examined in two groups,

First one is smell
- Most fragrant varieties are, respectively, Izmir (all Aegean types like Ozbas, Ege, Akhisar etc.) and Samsun Canik

Second one is flavor or sweetness
- Sweetest varieties are, respectively, Izmir (all Aegean), Samsun Maden, Gumushacikoy, Tasova, Tokat, Erbaa, Niksar, Duzce, Bursa, Bitlis, Yayladag, Iskenderun, Silvan and Mardin.

As seen, Izmir varieties take the first place both in the fragrance (smell) and the flavor (sweetness).."

Sounds interesting.

If I was back in Australia I'd be growing my own tampweed in a flash. Not possible without lights and climate control here.
