Flor de Cana Gold 4 Year Rum: "A Great Deep Fruit Mixer"

Flor de Cana of Nicaragua is a very well respected distiller whose products seem universally respected. The 4 Year earns an exceptional "8 from BTI, and is near the top of almost everyone's "best mixer" list. At just $12 for 750ml and $19 for 1.5 liters it is an amazing value. Flor de Cana was our first bulk purchase for mixing and for gifts - we have yet to be let down. The reviews:

Sue Sea:

Quote:
It is really hard to believe a fine mixing rum like this one is available so economically. Flor de Cana 4 Year comes in a classic, short-necked square bottle with a handsome traditional label. Color is a light amber with hints of green edges. Its aroma is of oak, deep fruit - apricot - and a light cigar box. 4 Year's taste is consistent, like eating a dried apricot and late astringency. The finish is short and lightly peppery, and leaves a nice light cigar box aftertaste.

Me:

If anything Flor de Cana has been criticised for being a bit too balanced, a bit bland if you will. And there is some truth to this. If you are like us you want a "real rum" - something that lets you know it's there - knocks distinctively at your door and is, well, interesting and a bit surprising. Still, Flor de Cana - all of them - are handsome and pleasant rums. At $12 the Four Year is a no brainer.

I found Four Year's aroma to be pungent - light cigar box/oak, noticeable vanilla (surprising) and a deep apricot. It is nice. The taste is of apricot but dry, almost bitter (like Sue Sea's "eating dried apricots", with late astringency. The finish is quite consistent, of apricot and cigar box.

Honestly I feel Four Year is a reasonable light sipper, with more going on than most. The combination of apricot, light oak and vanilla is surprising for such a young rum. Everyone should have a 1.5 liter of Flor de Cana 4 Year on hand.

Score for sipping (10 is best): Sue Sea - 4, Jimbo - 5. As a light sipper you may add a point or two. One of the top Gold mixers available.
