Ocumare Aged Rum:
My day job has little to do with rum - in fact, it is in health care. As luck - or the grace of God - would have it, I happened to rum, er run into the distributor of Old Monk Rum for South Florida. This was quite amazing as I'd found the Old Monk was an incredibly authentic flavored rum that I found extremely satisfying and beautifully conceived and produced.
What do I mean by authentic?
Let's put it this way. The average rum drinker - you and I - is confronted with various flavor "sensations" by such producers as Bacardi and Cruzan. Mango rum, strawberry rum, lemon rum and so many more. Most are distractingly singular, artificially flavored and quite overdone. Simplistic marketing-driven wet dreams. Stupid and ridiculous.
But there are exceptions:
Like Richard Seale's amazing Foursquare which is honestly labeled as "spiced" and which features authentic Barbadian spices. Delicious. The only other flavored rums that I'd place on the same planet as Foursquare are say, Coruba from Jamaica and Old Monk from India. Old Monk is particularly interesting as you can be sure that Indian spices are unique. And in the case of Old Monk they are so very well integrated and smoothly blended as to be virtually heavenly. The only problem...
In my years of searching, I'd only found one bottle and was stubbornly resisting finishing the last few drams of this diminishing treasure. Until today, when my chance meeting with the rep led me to a store who had and entire two cases of Old Monk. While I was there I found incredible deals on Botran Solera and a few others, including...
Ocumare Aged Rum.
A rum I'd heard about for years but had never actually seen, despite the fact that south Florida has access to more rums than any other state in the Union. Following our reacquaintance with Old Monk (which we compared with Foursquare and Sailor Jerry's), and a great Sancho Panza Glorioso cigar, Sue Sea and I decided to taste the Ocumare.
I have to be honest - I was floored. Sue Sea and I are both VERY particular, and have learned not to expect much from so many altered rums. Ocumare really opened our eyes. So much so that we jave decided to withhold our final review until we have the chance to taste it again tomorrow with no distraction by cigars or any other rums.
It was that good. Stay tuned and check back very soon.... _________________
