Capsule Rum Reviews

Capn's Note: Not all the rums reviewed have been encapsuled (I'm workin on it)! In fact, over 150 of the world's best regarded rums have been reviewed, and many do not appear here. If you can't find your rum, be sure to check the complete repository of reviews at The Rum Project Forum (here).

1 Barrel Rum Review:

"Traveller's 1 Barrel is an excellent example of the Twiggie syndrome. No doubt a young inexpensive rum, minimally aged (just one year), and poorly doctored with tanks of artificial maple/almond flavoring, et al. Not surprising, really..."

10 Cane (Cane Juice) Rum Review:

"Now I know most everyone has become familiar with 10 Cane, its computer designed bottle, top shelf location, purposely slanted orange label and slick marketing ("...historically cane is harvested in bundles of 10".) Uh-huh. I don't like rhum by regulation (AOC) and I certainly reject rhum by advertising agencies. But I digress. Is 10 Cane an agricole of distinction?..."

Agua Luca Cachaca Review:

"Americans, being used to smoother sprits, prefer higher-end cachaça in their mixed drinks, avoiding lower-end products like Pitú altogether. A Brazilian might counter that a caipirinha made with aged cachaça doesn't taste right, the flavors battling it out in the glass. So the trick then, IMHO, is to find a cachaça that is both light and smooth. ..."

Angostura 1919 Rum Review:

"...this was a breakthrough rum for me in terms of both tasting and reporting. I learned that descriptors from your own life experience are the best, and quite meaningful to others. "Bananas Foster", Angostura 1919, has a wonderful and memorable aroma. About as close to overdone as you can get without actually going over the top..."

Appleton Extra 12 Year Rum Review:

"Appleton Extra just knocked me out, this is a real rum and I understand why it was not long before Jamaican rum became the preferred premium rum in the early days. Aromawise my first impression was of vanilla and orange or cherry blossoms in a spring rain. If you live in Florida, perhaps you have a "frangipans" flowering tree..."

Appleton Reserve Rum Review:

"Its aroma, like the V/X is still fruity but now in the deeper range, like a thick apricot nectar or marmalade, against a background of spicy clove and oak. So far, similar to V/X but deeper and heavier. Now this is where Reserve parts company. Its taste is unidimensional..."

Appleton V/X Rum Review:

"All but the lowest priced Appletons come in sensual female bottles - shorter, full, voluptuous and with a smooth pinched waist. That, plus a handsome traditional label and I'm hooked. Put it on the shelf! Jim and I had already tasted and loved the Extra (rated 8 ). V/X's aroma is very pleasant: vanilla, some light citrus (orange), a bit of clove spice and last..."

Agua Luca Cachaca Review:

"Brazilians normally use cheap, harsh (unaged, column-still) cachaça in their caipirinhas, reserving the better, aged versions for drinking straight. Americans, being used to smoother sprits, prefer higher-end cachaça. So the trick then, IMHO, is to find a cachaça that is both light and smooth. Surprisingly, Água Luca fills the bill... (a Kevin Myers review)"

Bacardi Reserva 8 Anos Rum Review:

"You knew it had to happen. Most reviewers tend to ignore Bacardi and for good reason. Bacardi is about heavy duty politics, masterful marketing, bullying distribution and financial success. Still not all their rums are flavored or for "Bacardi and Coke". Bacardi 8 Anos deserves our review..."

Barbancourt Estate Reserve (15 Year) Rum Review:

"Estate Reserve opens with an aroma that begins to approximate a good molasses rum. A heavenly vanilla, caramel, burnt sugar maple with also a candy/syrupy honey effect. I picked up a definite pineapple, and a hint of deep orange. Unlike some molasses rums, these were not additives!...."

Barbancourt Five Star (8 Year) Rum Review:

"The aroma, as now evident was a heavenly robust vanilla with an immediate noticeable hint of cane, a bit of reedy straw and a light oak. I knew immediately this was an agricole, but so much better than the 10 Cane and St. James Ambre I'd tasted before...."

Barbancourt Pango Rum Review:

"The aroma is so unusual, pungent, and sweetly thick that one is misled to expect a cloying sweet and coating rum liqueur. It leaves a powerful first impression. The actual taste is really quite pleasant, relatively lighter, non-cloying and non-coating..."

Barbancourt Three Star (4 Year) Cane Juice Rum Review:

"As you may have read, I loved the Barbancourt Five Star. Although I'm not a huge fan of cane juice, or as the French call them, agricultural rum, Barbancourt Five Star really opened my eyes. Three Star's aroma struck me immediately as crisp, smooth and mellow. Now I know these are unusual words to describe an aroma, but I can assure you they work. My first impression was of a pungent cane and reed - what I call rice mat..."

Brinley Gold Coffee Rum:

"To Sue Sea and I a flavored rum is all about authenticity. We simply don't like artificial and I really don't care how well it's done. Period. And a flavored rum is first and foremost a rum. With a well integrated and authentic flavor skillfully blended in. If the first thing we note is the flavor, we feel the blend has failed. Brinley's Gold Coffee Rum does not disappoint...."

Brinley Gold Vanilla Rum:

"Brinley's is a deep, rich and features authentic vanilla and a touch of coffee. Not overpowering, just right. Whaler's aroma is mixed: a pungent almond, vanilla, butterscotch and apricot in a balance..."

Brugal Anejo Rum:

Charbay Tropical Islands Cane Rum:

"Some of you may have heard of this cane juice rum, an alleged super premium. After Tommy Bahama , or 10 Cane I'd hope that you have more than a healthy skepticism over any rum making such a claim. Except for one thing... this one deserves it!"

Coruba Jamaica Rum Review:

"A traditional rum bottle which sports a bright, cheery, colorful and tropical label featuring a glaring rising sun, and a pair of frondy green coconut palms. You can spot the Coruba from across the room, mon! Jim and I are big fans of Jamaican and Barbadian rums and Coruba does not disappoint. Coruba lives up to its lively label..."

Conch Republic Dark Rum Review:

"There's an off-the-beaten-path bakery and tiny restaurant in Key West called Henrietta's. And it's run by a robust island woman of the same name. But my point is we do like to try products from our Paradise so sooner or later we were bound to buy a bottle of Conch Republic Dark Rum. I expected rotgut, but Conch Republic is really..."

Cruzan Black Strap Rum Review:

Cruzan Estate Diamond Rum Review:

"The aroma of Estate Diamon immediately struck me as that of eggnog with some nutmeg. Similar to a banana nut bread just out of the oven with a bit of melted butter. Yummy! Later on I picked up some light caramel and butterscotch aromas. Like all good rums, this one has balance and is..."

Cruzan Guava Rum Review:

"Best of it's class! That's an easy award, cause it's the only guava rum I know of. Describing it is easy too. It tastes like, uh, guavas - sweet and easy to drink... (a Kevin Myers review)"

Cruzan Single Barrel Rum Review:

"I do like a nice sip of rum on certain mornings while Sue Sea sleeps in. I get a chance to watch the news, put my feet up and relax before the business of the day. On this particular day Sue Sea stumbled out, making her usual beeline for the coffeepot and exclaimed "So you're having pancakes this morning?". "What?", I replied "heck, no". Turns out she had smelled the wonderful aroma of vanilla throughout the house..."

Cubaney 8 Year Solera Reserve Rum Review:

"Cubaney 8 Year is an interesting rum and fairly priced. Its color is medium amber with fast, thin legs. This is a rum you could easily identify in a blind tasting - its spicy aroma is unmistakeable, with an aroma of strong clove and cinnamon. I picked up a hint of vanilla..."

Dark Rum Smackdown - A Review:

"We owned the three major darks - Gosling, Cruzan and Myers. And Coruba to boot. We thought it would be great to do a real tasting with these in both sipping and mixing mode. We first tasted each neat, and in just that order - there are reviews for each in this section..."

Diplomatico Reserva Rum Review:

"Lovely classic, squat and rich looking, fogged green bottle. Distillers of rum seem to want that classic old rich look and Diplomatico Reserva almost achieves this. But not quite. Reserva's aroma was fairly simple..."

Doorly's Five Year Rum Review:

Doorly's XO Rum Review:

"Doorly's XO has a beautiful, sparkling amber color, very reminiscent of Mount Gay Extra Old. It's clear and glowing has great legs, a joy to watch. The aroma is old oakey with a bit of deep citrus, apricot-like. A sort sweet pancakey aroma. The taste is as smooth as it is explosive..."

El Dorado 5 Year Rum Review:

"Sue Sea and I bought and tasted the El Dorado 12 and 15 some time ago. These two fine rums are almost universally well regarded, and can be had quite reasonably at $20 and $24 respectively. Like many distillers, DDL (Demerara Distillers, Ltd) also produces a low price product, in this case the El Dorado 5 Year, and does so at a ridiculously low price. How does the 5 Year compare? You might be surprised. Very surprised..."

El Dorado 12 Year Special Reserve Rum Review:

"El Dorado 12 Year comes in yet another attractive, squat bottle. Any sailor (this includes "It's all good" Preacher Ed) can't help but love this classic sailing ship label and faux red and gold seal. The color is a clear dark amber with lovely slow legs. Nice. ED12's aroma is striking: a pungent deep tobacco-leather, smokey and oakey. If this doesn't remind you of a historic, tarred sailing vessel, nothing will..."

El Dorado 15 Year Special Reserve Rum Review:

"El Dorado 15 is a nice clear medium amber, nice legs. Its aroma is sweet peach/apricot/mango (the deeper fruits), clove and a sharper cinnamon ginger. It is not syrupy though. On reflection I picked up a bit of oak and vanilla caramel..."

El Dorado Rums, the Smackdown - A Review:

"Betcha thought this smackdown would be between the tippy top El Dorados - the 12, 15 and the 21 - or even, gulp, the 25 Year. Are you kidding? Most of us tend not mortgage our rums. This smackdown is between the 12, 15 and, uh, the 5 Year! Am I nuts? Comparing an $8.99 bottom shelf price point to such fine and respected rums as the 12 and 15? Yup, and won't you be surprised..."

El Dorado Golden Rum Cream Review:

"The aroma is of almond and vanilla and, of course, cream. Pleasant and light. The taste is entirely consistent and creamy as well. As we both noted, it would be really hard to distinguish this rum from Bailey's..."

Fernandez 19 Gold Rum Review:

"Fernandez "19" Gold Rum is, well, gold with fast thin legs. It is most certainly a light rum and there is no doubt it was made by Angostura. Like Sue Sea I found the aroma extremely pleasant - light and featuring a light "Banana's Foster" reminiscent of Angostura 1919, and a very light almond. The first taste was sweet but fleeting..."

Flor de Cana Four (4) Year Rum Review:

Flor de Cana Seven (7) Year Rum Review:

"Flor de Cana 7 year comes in a nice classic squared off bottle; topped by an impressive black, mahogany and gold label. Pretty. I loved the aroma of this rum - a hint of deep citrus orange topped with just a wisp of floral (magnolia?). There's oak and what I can only describe as a grassy, outdoorsy, woodsy effect. Complex and..."

Flor de Cana Twelve (12) Year Rum Review:

"I first tasted Flor de Cana Twelve (12) Year as part of a long awaited "smackdown" of the 4-7-12 years (click here). This was a terrific experience, be sure to check it out. I found the Twelve's aroma featured tarry oak (nice), with a bit of alcohol prickle (not as much as the four) against a background of..."

Flor de Cana Eighteen {18} Year Rum Review:

"Its first aroma was of an oakey bourbon, then deep apricot, a rindy leather, a slight alcohol prickle, a peppery, smokey chickory and what I would call an very overly ripe banana. Rich, complex and intriguing. On my first taste... Jesus, Mary, Joseph!..."

Foursquare Spiced Rum Review:

"Lesser rums are less complex and/or feature a spice to the extent that it overwhelms. Not Foursquare. Seales is honest enough to clearly label and promote his one and only spiced rum as such. And uses real spices. But not all rums do..."

Gosling's Gold Bermuda Rum Review:

"It's smooth and mellow, and I guess it qualifies as a basic simple light sipper. I find most fine rums emerge with time in the glass, with more aromas and tastes becoming apparent. Gosling's Gold is just the opposite..."

Jack Tar Superior Dark Rum Review:

"Jack Tar Dark Rum, like others of its genre, must be approached carefully. The first time I popped the screw cap (you are laughing aren't you?) I immediately noted its dunderlike aroma and placed it in the Jamaican style. Actually it is distilled in Jamaica and bottled in South Africa. Pungent, powerful, sweet, dry and hot..."

Montecristo 12 Year Cane Juice Rum Review:

"Montecristo 12 Year is a worthy competitor to the world renown Barbancourt, falling somewhere in between the world class 8 year and the 15 year. In comparison, the Barbancourt 15 year is over oaked, while the 8 year old Barbancourt Five Star is lighter and reedier...."

Mount Gay Extra Old Rum Review:

"On my nosing the first aroma is like that of a fine wooden cabinet. Black cherry. A leather chair. Nutty vanilla appears. A bit of nutmeg, a touch of citrus. Spice and clove. And caramel. Even a touch of maple syrup. Like all better rums..."

Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum Review:

"Those aromas were my first impression of Mount Gay Sugar Cane: reedy, bamboo-like, palm fronds, very lightly smoky wood (like a chicory/hickory/mesquite) , almondy and a little caramel. With breathing more and more light vanilla became apparent to me..."

Myers's Original Dark Rum Review:

"I found Myers surprising. It's dark amber, take no prisoners bottle was NOT designed by the marketing department. You think "Is this medicine? Can I handle this 'full-bodied' rum?". I was expecting to nose a strong alcohol, but to my surprise, I found a very pleasant light, almost grassy, reedy aroma with light vanilla in the background. Some coffee or perhaps hazelnut, and a solid, deep raisin..."

Myers's Platinum White Rum Review:

"Myers's Platinum White Rum could be one of the best mixing Rum's on the market today. It has enough flavor to warrant its purchase over cheaper but similar products that lack the flavor in this bottle... (an MJ Littman review)"

Origine Amber Estate Reserve Rum Review:

Oronoco Rum Review:

Pampero Aniversario Reserva Exclusiva Rum Review:

"After much thought, and for now I have decided to place Aniversario Reserva Exclusiva in the Jamaican style section due to factors that will become apparent. Pirate's Choice Molasses Reef Rum Review:

"Now you know I love a nice bottle, and while the label is only slightly contrived, it successfully romanticizes our Caribbean Pirates. The rum occupies a classic squat round bottle with an oversize cork and features an anchor and a plundered ship burning in the night. Just like our fire. How perfect.
And so was this delicious rum..."

Plantation Barbados Old Reserve 1995 Rum Review:

"Plantation tastes of smooth honey, followed by some raisins or dark fruit. Surprisingly, it changed to a dry, almost warming pepper - like biting into a peppercorn. The finish was long, peppery, warm and what I call explosive. There was an aftertaste of slightly bitter cacao - very nice. I think Plantation 95 is a great sipping rum - alluring, surprising, smooth and enticing..."

Prichard's Fine Rum (Gold) Review:

"Tennessee does imply a rich history of moonshiners, good bourbon and great horses. Could a good rum possibly come out of this snowbound land lost in middle of the North American continent? You might be surprised..."

Pusser's Blue Label British Navy Rum Review:

"Blue Label appears in the Navy rum section for obvious reasons. It is included here because it is also one of the finest examples of how great aromatic pot stilled rums taste. Jamaican rums depend on their unique long fermentation, based on the use of "dunder" from previous batches. What we do know about its "secret" formula is that the British Navy Rum (and Pussers) was/is made from five West Indian pot stilled rums with absolutely no additives"...

Pyrat Pistol Rum Review:

"Pyrat Pistol is indeed explosive and it's all about its syrupy taste. Sue Sea compared it to the finish of a overcarbonated champagne peppering your mouth and throat. To me Pistol is overdone, an XO on steroids..."

Pyrat Superior Blanco Rum Review:

"The Pyrat Blanco is actually quite different and rather pleasant for a white. It's aroma is crisp and refreshing, of licorice and anise, bit of background vanilla and with an elusive high citrus tone - one we've never found in any other unflavored rum..."

Pyrat XO Rum Review:

"I love the Pyrat XO's bottle - it is stunning and will be one of the highlights on your top shelf or liquor cabinet. To me the bottle is an important part of the experience. R.L. Seale's 10 Year Rum Review:

"I adore R. L. Seale's 10 Year. It's first aroma is of oak, citrus - especially orange - and it is toasty smoky. Later I picked up a bit of raisin, vanilla and almond. Seale's is medium bodied and smooth . And like all fine rums, is completely consistent with its aroma, with tastes of dark orange, light butter and..."

Ron Abuelo Anejo Rum Review:

"One night when I was typing away I decided to pour a Ron Abuelo Anejo to keep me company. And had another, and yet another. It was easy to sip, perhaps too easy. I do love the explosive, peppery taste, you know you're drinking a real rum..."

Ron Abuelo Anejo 7 Anos Rum Review:

"Ron Abuelo Anejo 7 Anos is a noticeable improvement over its younger brother, Ron Abuelo Anejo (RAA). The aroma was still light but had more going on, though still not what I would call complex. Seven has lost the citrus and lightness and I pick up a butterscotch or maple and caramel sweetness, but also a bit of..."

Ron Antigua Bodega 1800 Six (6) Anos Rum Review:

"After a couple drams each, we had an entirely different impression. This time, Ron Bodega 1800 opened with an extremely pleasant deep, rindy leather - a kind of tarry, ropey oakum. Over a background of deep citrus orange, and a high foreground of vanilla caramel! Absolutely lovely..."

Ron Botran Solera 12 Year Rum Review:

"Ron Botran Solera 1893 may have the one of the most beautiful available and I'd almost buy it for the bottle alone. I liked this rum before we started doing real tastings, I liked it at Robert Burr's and I like it now. Jim had set up a flight with Pusser's Blue Label and the Botran 12, which we tasted just before the 1893. I found 1893's aroma very enticing - a sweet, spicy ginger and..."

Ron Barcelo Imperial Rum Review:

Ron Botran Solera 1893 Rum Review:

"Botran 12 Year comes in more classic round and slightly tapered, short necked bottle with a quietly elegant label and molded in shield. A nice quiet presence on your shelves. Botran 12's early aroma was of cork and a little oak - pungent, and perhaps a bit of reedy bamboo. The aroma develops with clove..."

Ron Centenario Conmemorativo Rum Review:

"Ahhh, South Florida - a true Paradise. The land of great weather, breathtaking sunsets, pristine waters, lush tropical plants, stunning women, and rum. Today we Ron Centenario Commemorativo. When thinking of fine rum the countries of Barbados, Jamaica, Cuba and Guatemala tend to occupy one's opening thoughts. But not Costa Rica. That just changed..."

Ron del Barrilito Three Star Rum Review:

"I found the aromas more dominated by the orange licorice with a leathery overtone that to me seems related to the Two Stars caney aroma. Ron del Barrilito Two Star Rum Review:

Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva Solera 15 Rum Review:

"I must tell you that I was very impressed with the very smooth and balanced San Pablo. The Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva was different..."

Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Anos Rum Review:

"You know it's about time we reviewed the Big Kahuna - Zacapa 23 - the rum that conquered recent rum smackdowns until it was retired from competition. Consider it a modern day Barbancourt Five Star, but with one exception. Zacapa - the 23 anyway - doesn't have nearly as much to offer..."

Rum San Pablo Rum Review:

"Rum San Pablo presents in an honest gold, no orange or amber, with good clarity, nice legs. It opens lightly and sweetly with just a hint of clove in the background. Saint James Ambre Cane Juice Rum Review:

"Saint James was not like any of the other molasses based rums I've tasted. The aroma delivered an earthy, ricey, grainy cane with alcohol overtones. The taste reflected the aroma but opened up a bit of anise, clove, cork and a light woody bamboo flavor. Mostly grassey with a very slight hint of smooth butterscotch. It had a lingering..."

Saint James Extra Old Cane Juice Rum Review:

"I must admit that I am not especially enamored of cane juice rum, particularly after tasting St. James Ambre, which is quite pungent. But Jim convinced me to try once again, this time tasting their Extra Old. Much better, no doubt the result of aging. The initial aroma was an orange/vanilla, with some light cane, reedy, like bamboo. This pleasant aroma certainly set up my expectations, but the taste was disappointing..."

Saint James Hors d'Age Cane Juice Rum Review:

"I have always liked the Saint James bottles, which look every bit of authentic, rich, quiet and cultured - similar to fine aged whiskey, which is actually not a bad comparison. Some of you may remember that I found Extra Old's aroma (unlike the Ambre) quite enticing, but that its taste was hollow. Hors d'Age was completely different and really quite nice. Like the Extra Old, the aroma was initially a smooth caney/reedy with a deep orange, vanilla and raisin coming forth..."

Santa Teresa 1796 Rum Review:

"Santa Teresa 1796 seems to garner uniformly top ratings and exceeds the preferred $20-29 price range. Is it worthy and worth it? Largely - yes, but like Zacapa 23 perhaps a bit overrated. Or not. It's aroma is wonderful - a bit oakey, maybe a bit of cherrywood. But the real feature is a deeper apricot vanilla, reminiscent of..."

Santero Seven (7) Year Rum Review:

"To me the secret of a good rum is what I call "crescendo". A rum that slowly builds toward a beautiful, lasting finish and aftertaste. The kind of aftertaste that makes you want to sip again. Rum Santero has that, and does so with great pleasantness and smoothness..."

Sea Wynde Rum Review:

"Jamaican style rums can be among the most challenging. They require time, airing and a careful approach. Dive in and your testicles (if you are so equipped) may shrivel in revolt. Ease your way in and you may have an orgasmic lust affair (a Capn Jimbo word picture, patent pending). Navy rums sit at the limits of this range, and Sea Wynde is perhaps the most visible example..."

Sergeant (Sgt) Classick Gold Rum Review:

"Sergeant Classick is a very difficult rum to both taste and rate. I have to agree with Sue Sea that the pungent, sour and even harsh aroma is hard to get past. It colors the entire experience. And few, few molasses rums present this way..."

Tommy Bahama Golden Sun Rum Review:

"Was I impressed? I was. A great bottle whets the anticipation, and this presentation led me to expect the "ultra-premium" rum it promoted. The aroma did not let me down - it was heavenly. An orange/apricot marmalade with light leather and oak, and vanilla. Smooth, rich and with fruity character. A tiny hint of cinnamon. At this point I thought we had a winner..."

Vizcaya VXOP Cask 21 Rum Review:

"On this tasting - free of distracting bosoms - I had a very different experience. It just goes to show you how the hustle and bustle, rapid fire presentation of a bunch of rums at a "tasting" can confuse and obfuscate. Not to mention the effect of a goodly amount of intoxicating alcohol..."

Whaler's Vanille Rum Review:

Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Review:

"Are you a real man? Or woman? Like its bottle, Wray & Nephew White Overproof (63%) is a no-nonsense rum that some consider the best overproof in the world. Hey, it's from Jamaica, ask me if I'm surprised. But the first time we poured a shot, we came close to pouring many more shots... down the drain! This rum must be approached with care. Lots of care. But approached properly, you too may come to appreciate this fine rum..."
